2024 Summer Resources
Enrolling students in summer learning can help prevent the "summer slide" where students lose academic progress over the break. Summer learning can also provide opportunities for students to explore new interests, build skills, and prepare for future academic and career goals.
Summer Opportunities for Current HPS Students
Early Literacy Institute - Early Elementary: Incoming kindergarteners with no previous formal education experience and current grade K - 3 students who have been identified based on I-Ready assessments and teacher recommendations.
July 1 - August 8 (6 weeks), Monday - Thursday 7:45 am - 12:00 pm
Language Institute: Current grade K- 6 who receive multilingual instruction during the school year.
July 1 - July 25 (4 weeks), Monday - Thursday 7:45 am - 12:00 pm
Special Education Extended School Year - Preschool: Current preschool students who have extended year services in their IEP.
July 1 - August 8 (4-6 weeks), Monday - Thursday 8:45 am - 11:15 am
Special Education Extended School Year - Elementary: Current K - grade 6 students who have extended year services in their IEP.
July 1 - August 8 (6 weeks), Monday - Thursday 7:45 am - 12:00 pm
Discovery Club/Access 21 - Elementary: Current grades K -4 from Bradford El, Golden Hill, Pen Lake, Silver Hill, Tilton.
July 1 - July 25 (4 weeks), Monday - Thursday 7:45 am - 12:00 pm
HPS and Community Partner programs:
YMCA Summer Literacy Academy: Current K-2 students who are below grade level reading per I-Ready assessment data.
YMCA Step Up to K Extended Day: Incoming and current K students attending the Early Learning Institute that need an extended day schedule.
Boys and Girls Club Kids Club: Current grade K-3 students who are below grade level reading per I-Ready assessment data.
Community Partners:
Haverhill Public Library – offers weekly programming, booklists, reading challenges, and grab-and-go craft kits.
Family & Community Connection|Community Action Inc - offers free children's programs, story time, and literacy activities, along with some parent workshops. Programs are free and 45-60 min long. An adult must participate with the child. Priority goes to families living in: Haverhill, Groveland, Georgetown, Merrimac, Amesbury and West Newbury.
The Buttonwoods Museum - offers programming for different student age groups, and is planning a variety of summer programs for kids and families twice a week.
Whittier Birthplace - Preschoolers and a caregiver are invited to join each Thursday from 10am-11am June 22nd through August 24th for story reading and craft.

YWCA - Camp Y-Wood is an affordable summer ay camp, serving children ages 5 to 14. The camp site offers 22-acres of beautiful, sprawing grounds located on Captain’s Pond in nearby Salem, NH.
YWCA - The YWCA school-age program for youth ages 5 to 13 provies a wide range of enrichment opportunities including; Urban Explorers, Nutrition Instruction, Sports, Tutoring, Swim School, and Early Learning.
